While Eureka wire sculptor Elizabeth Berrien twists and weaves wire animals with her bare hands at the Farm Store's Pet Fair this Saturday, animal communictor and Reiki master Linda Wahlund will help visitors understand and communicate with the dogs, cats and other animals in their lives.

The two friends have many overlapping interests. When Berrien attended a first Reiki workshop at Wahlund's home, she was welcomed by the sight of her own wire sculpture, an equine "figment" in the image of Wahlund's horse, Foxy. As with many coincidences in the two women's lives, Berrien had created the sculpture of Foxy before even meeting Linda Wahlund or setting eyes on her horse.

In Elizabeth's words, "I've always communicated with animals to some degree. It's like one of my coffee mugs says, 'cats know exactly what we think - they just don't give a damn'. But Linda takes it so much further. She can genuinely tell what the world looks like from the animals' point of view. She's very good at helping people understand what their animals want and need."

Linda Wahlund has used her gift for helping locate lost animals several times this summer. When frantic owners call, she makes an intuitive connection with the animal. By "looking out through the animal's eyes", she identifies nearby landmarks and conveys the information to the owners, who then search the area as Linda instructs. Wahlund is modest about her success with lost animals. "I love it when it works out happily, but it doesn't always... sometimes things end sadly."

The paths of the two women cross often. Each lives with a combination of cats, dogs and horses. Linda often drops by "Rancho Bar Berrien" in Freshwater to work Reiki with Dutch, the artist's mustang. She also drops by Elizabeth's studio in Old Town, "Usually just as I'm telling a client with animal problems they should really talk to Linda. Last Arts Alive, Linda walked in just as I was handing the clients her brochure."

Berrien recently wrote an online article on teaching innovative wire sculpture, part of her web site at www.wirelady.com. Posted just this week, it is receiving a flurry of attention from arts educators across the US.

In composing a definition and history of wire sculpture for her site, Berrien was astonished to discover that modern dictionaries still do not carry a definition of wire sculpture. "So I corrected the situation, submitted 'wire sculpture' to the Oxford English Dictionary. I guess there was a time when they didn't carry definitions for oil painting or watercolors either..."

Elizabeth Berrien and Linda Wahlund will welcome visitors at Saturday's Pet Fair at the Farm Store, 10:30 AM to 4PM saturday September 10th. Berrien may be reached at (707) 445-4931, Wahlund may be reached at (707) 445-0207.
