EUREKA -- World-class wire sculptor Elizabeth Berrien of Eureka has launched a new website, www.wirelady.com , which has drawn inquiries from Europe, Japan, Australia and Canada for her works in wire. "Within hours, I had my first hit -- an architectural firm that had just about given up their search for a wire sculptor of my caliber," said Berrien who provided a proposal to the firm, which specializes in "green" projects. She is currently awaiting a response.
As Berrien prepared to launch her website, she discovered major changes in her field.
"Five years ago, a Web search for wire sculpture would bring up just a handful of us -- mainly Alexander Calder, Ruth Asawa and myself, and a few other dedicated pioneers working with wire," she said.
Today, a Web search brings up several hundred thousand references to wire sculpture, also known as wire art.
Berrien also discovered a welcome new site for Michael Ball's book, "Wire Magic," which carried pages showing the works of a dozen wire sculptors from around the world. When she contacted the author, he granted her a page of her own. Upon discovering that Ball's directory was apparently the only effort to identify and link up wire sculptors, Berrien established Wire Sculpture International, a guild by and for wire sculptors throughout the world.
