How the Masks Came to Be
Unlike conventional sculptors, Elizabeth Berrien starts each wire sculpture with the animal's face. In 1988, Elizabeth started a collection for a scheduled exhibit with Mendocino's exclusive Highlight Gallery. A severe and lingering flu left her so weak, she was unable to weave the bodies onto her wire sculptures in time for the show deadline.
|
Rather than show up empty-handed, she brought the animal faces, wires still trailing, and declared it "a Show of Spirit Masks".
The gallery management was, to say the least, dubious - they were accustomed to Berrien's full-body wire animals. But when the works were unveiled, the public was thrilled, and the show was a sellout. Elizabeth Berrien has offered her spirit masks ever since.

Wire animal masks make wonderful wall art, casting complex and intricate shadows. Their eyes seem to folow you around the room, as if the spirit of a wild animal is using the wire spirit mask as a portal to visit the "real" world.
