A
"Thank You" Letter from the Artist
North Coast Cultural Trust
Humboldt Area Foundation
P. O. Box 99
Bayside, CA
December 6, 2005
Greetings:
A year ago you selected me as recipient of the 2005 Victor Thomas
Jacoby Award. Today I want to thank you again, and tell you how this
fellowship has impacted my life. It has bought me time to explore and
pursue options that have catapulted my creative and professional life
into a new era.
Receiving the Jacoby Award inspired me to get more connected with the
Humboldt area community, the educational culture, and the worldwide
community of wire sculptors.
In the interests of getting students off to a good start with wire
sculpture, I authored an online "Innovative Wire Sculpture" tutorial.
At the request of educators, I expanded it to a lesson plan suitable
for teaching to grades 2-12. Every week I get requests from sculptors
and educators thoughout the world for advice on working with wire.
Their questions help me form the basis of my upcoming wire sculpture
book.
While visiting classrooms in California and Kentucky to teach wire
sculpture, I've striven to convey as much as possible to the teachers
so they can carry on in my absence. I think I will be much more
effective in spreading innovative wire sculpture methods by organizing
workshops for educators. Intead of reaching 25 students here and there,
I can draw 30 or 60 art teachers and professors at a time. Combined
with a book and video on the topic, this could impact thousands of art
students.
The Jacoby Award also afforded me time to focus more on marketing my
artwork. By dedicating time to studying HTML code and web design, I now
have a website that generates private and corporate commissions from
Europe, Australia, the US and Canada. Large-scale commissions afford me
the luxury of extra time, to create more experimental works and conduct
more research on the history and evolution of wire sculpture.
There have been times, in the past decade, when I've felt over-worked
and creatively stale making conventional "bread and butter" works that
put food on the table and paid the mortgage, but did little to generate
creative growth. Since receiving the Victor Thomas Jacoby Award, I've
been infused with new energy and creativity. The spate of custom
commissions has challenged me to create new and unusual works to
satisfy my eye and that of the client alike.
I am resolved to maintain the positive momentum sparked by the Victor
Jacoby Award, and to continue to grow artistically, spiritually and
professionally. I fondly hope that before too long, I can find a way to
establish a grant through the North Coast Cultural Trust so even more
artists can receive the encouragement, affirmation and support that
have helped me so much.
With my kindest and sincerest regards,
Elizabeth Berrien
