My son says that once you start working with wire, it is impossible to stop. - Ladislav Jurovaty, Sr

Wire sculpture, a once-rare medium, is experiencing a quiet revolution. Today, colleges offer wire sculpture as a standard item of art curriculum. Still, there is a surprising dearth of knowledge about the self-taught pioneers and innovators who evolved separately, each carving a personal approach to working with wire.

* Innovators and Pioneers in the Field of Contemporary Wire Sculpture
Elizabeth Berrien complied this directory to showcase the broad spectrum of innovation and excellence manifesting itself in modern-day wire sculpture. Art collectors, museum curators, educators, designers and architects may access and study the works of over eighty distinctive contemporary wire sculptors.

Most wire sculptors of the last century worked within a vacuum - pioneering their own approach to the medium while never knowing of each other's works. Wire sculpture is among the most exasperating art forms on earth. Wire can be too hard, too soft, sharp, stickery, slippery, and just plain uncooperative. It takes extraordinary patience, persistence and a knack for problem-solving to teach oneself to create from wire.

Guidelines for listing with the Directory are simple - we jury for distinctive works - easily recognizeable as those of a specific wire sculptor - consisting of at least 75% wire. To submit, send info and/or small (about 300x300) jpeg image to: wirezoo@earthlink.net

All wire sculptors listed above have qualified for membership in Wire Sculpture International,
the worldwide guild of wire sculptors. They are encouraged to grant reciprocal links to http://www.wirelady.com/berrienwiredirectorypage.html.

We're still searching for the oldtimers - folk art pioneers in wire who might otherwise fade unnoticed from the scene. If you know of a seasoned wire sculptor not listed here, please let us know at wirezoo@earthlink.net
