" Wire is light and easy to install and [wire] drawings don't fade in the sun. Wire is also real easy to clean and, if you need it to go with your decor, you can paint it any color you want without changing the image" - Bart Soutendijk

* = Innovators and Pioneers in the Field of Contemporary Wire Sculpture
Bradley Partlow of Hawaii is entirely self-taught in the creation of twisted wire sculptures made from single strands. His subjects include people, trees and wire botanicals.

Leigh Pennebaker uses jagged metal fencing and rebar tie-wire to construct wire fashion-oriented sculptures. She is intrigued by the contrast of the harsh materials and the soft, flowing subject matter. Her works are a sculptural commentary on the social and political connotations of entrapment and bondage juxtaposed with iconic feminine beauty.

Tom Phillips Word Sculpture: Wire Sculpture

Ron Rayment and Adrian Rayment formed Rayment Wire in 1987. They create individual wire sculptures, and produce wirework in both contemporary and Victorian styles. creating large structures such as gazebos, rose temples, plus trellis, arches and a comprehensive range of wirework furniture for both gardens and interior.

*Preston Reuther invented his own technique of wrapped, non-soldered wire jewelry. His step-by-step teachings have inspired hundreds of wire jewelers. Many are content to adapt and work within his familiar style. Several innovative wire jewelers use Preston's techniques as a springboard, evolving their own distinctive styles.

C.W. Roelle renders intensely detailed, 2-dimensional wire drawings that serve as commentaries on people in involved, very human situations. Every picture tells a story... and even the frames are densely worked loops and bends of black steel wire.

Ernie Rose lives in Hillsboro, KY, where he is employed in a pallet mill. In his free time he wroks at building furniture and of course his first love, twisting wire, which he has done "since he can remember". He enjoys playing chess with his nephew, or at least use to until he started beating him. A self-taught wire sculptor who fearlessly combines "twist ties" with other wires, Ernie Rose has several wire works in a folk art exhibit. Contact: dunkirks@alltel.net

Sophie Ryder of Great Britain renders moody, densely woven figurative and semi-abstract wire sculptures with strong surface movement and a strong sense of mythic presence.

Alan Saret, whose abstract, organic wire sculptures received acclaim in the sixties, had a fascination with the free-form, random and organic nature of common fencing wire.

Gerry Sattele creates powerful, densely packed abstract wire forms.

Jack Sewell of Eureka, CA creates large-scale humans and other forms in welded copper wire and tubing.

Dar Shelton started working with wire geometric solids in 1993. He makes airy extension from the points and planes of conventional solids... transforming them into something entirely different.

Slovakian traditional wireworkers preserve a 400-year history of innovation in wirework.

Alison Bailey Smith wearable art from recycled coloured wire.

Celia Smith of Great Britain incorporates recycled wires, including burnt electrical wire, into semi-abstract yet very realistic bird forms. She also conducts wire sculpture Workshops.

*Bart Soutendijk, wire muralist, devoted thirty years to paring down and refining his "condensed figurative" wire wall sculptures. Starting with a drawing based on his own photographs, he strips away all non-essential lines. He creates a wire model, then bends steel rods by hand to create a free-hanging wall sculpture.

Ron Stattner of Montreal, Canada applies his love of surfing and music to whimsical wire musicians, dancers and people engaged in sports from copper and steel wire.

Ryan Stimers played with wire in school, graduated college with an engineering degree, but decided to become a full time artist. He enjoys the serendipity of traveling light and traveling far, using just a pair of needle-nose pliers to make custom single-strand wire sculptures from 16-gauge wire "on the spot".

Nathaniel Stitzlein creates wire sculptures based on various types of fish, animals and portraits of people.
